TRAVEL SECURITY

1. General Safety

  • Crime Levels: Sri Lanka has a relatively low crime rate compared to many other countries, especially concerning violent crime. However, petty crimes like pickpocketing, bag snatching, and scams can occur in busy tourist areas, public transport, and crowded markets.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Avoid displaying valuables like expensive jewelry or large sums of money.
    • Keep your belongings secure, especially in crowded areas.
    • Always use a safe in your hotel room to store passports, money, and valuables.
    • Be cautious when using ATMs, and avoid isolated locations when withdrawing cash.

2. Political Stability

  • Current Situation: Sri Lanka has experienced political unrest in the past, including the civil war that ended in 2009 and some sporadic protests in recent years. However, the country has remained peaceful in most areas, and political demonstrations are usually localized.
  • Precautions: Stay informed about the local news and avoid areas where protests or large gatherings are taking place. Tourists are generally not targeted during political demonstrations, but it’s best to avoid being caught in any unrest.

3. Terrorism

  • Recent History: In April 2019, Sri Lanka experienced coordinated terrorist attacks on churches and hotels. Since then, the security forces have tightened measures, and there have been no major incidents since.
  • Security Measures: Authorities have increased security at airports, hotels, and popular tourist sites. Travelers will notice a visible police and military presence in some locations, which is part of ongoing security efforts.
  • Precautions: While the risk of terrorism is currently low, it’s wise to remain vigilant and follow any local advisories or updates from your embassy.

4. Natural Disasters

  • Tsunamis and Flooding: Sri Lanka is prone to natural disasters such as tsunamis, floods, and landslides, particularly during the monsoon seasons (May to September and November to February). The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami significantly affected the country, and precautions have since been put in place, including early warning systems.
  • Precautions:
    • Be aware of the weather patterns during your visit, especially in coastal and mountainous areas.
    • Pay attention to weather forecasts, tsunami warnings, and follow local advice if any natural disaster occurs.
